(12 mar. 1738, Cumberland, Inglaterra–27 abr. 1804, Epsom, Surrey).

Clérigo anglonorteamericano. Viajó a Virginia en 1750 como instructor privado. En su calidad de cura párroco de Annapolis, Md., le correspondió instruir al hijastro de George Washington y se convirtió en amigo de la familia. Sus puntos de vista realistas le costaron el empleo y en 1775 tuvo que regresar a Inglaterra. En su retiro escribió A View of the Causes and Consequences of the American Revolution [Una visión de las causas y consecuencias de la guerra de la independencia de EE.UU.]; su glosario de " palabras arcaicas y provincianas se usó más adelante en el diccionario de Noah Webster.
